Plumeria
(Frangipani)
The Plumeria (Frangipani) is a unique tree among plants. Tropical in Origin, susceptible to freezing temperatures, the Plumeria goes dormant in the winter, losing its leaves and needing no care. The Plumeria needs winter protection when the temperature drops to 38-deg/F. or lower.
Charles Plumier, a French botanist, traveled to the Caribbean in the 17th century and gave it his name.
The Plumeria is a member of the Apocynaceac family of plants and it is a native of Tropical America.
In the Far East the Plumeria is called the Pagoda or Temple Tree.
Introduced to Hawaii in 1860, it is used today in the Islands for making the Traditional Lei because of its Sweet Perfume Flowers.
